language differences.

i printed out a very simple comic that made me roll in laugher
and shared it with 2 of my thai colleagues.
but they couldn't get it.
and explaining a joke really doesn't quite make the cut of humour does it?

i read this quote,
'I roll after health like a watermelon.'
and that had me giggling my arse off for a few minutes - maybe 5.
i almost wrote it on a post-it note for my desk....
then i read it again.
but this time it read,
'I roll after health like a waterman.'
- Jonathan Swift

i don't get it.
ah well, so be it.
my version is funnier.

"“Conformity” is a dirty word to Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the death of the individual, he says, the enemy of originality. Indeed, the development of the individual self is one side of the human experience. But to reject conformity offhand is to forfeit the other side of that experience – the individual’s participation in the community. Self-awareness may be a uniquely human faculty among all of Earth’s animals, but so, too, is the formation of complex society. Total sacrifice of the self in the name of societal submission would be a horrifying perversion of human nature. On the same lines, however, the total rejection of conformity in the pursuit of self-reliance is not only impossible, it is a devastating sacrifice of the human experience."

"The war has cost the United States $500 billion. Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed and millions displaced. Nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers have been killed, as well as 175 British troops and 134 from other countries."
- Reuters report

no 'weapons of mass destruction' was found,
millions of Iraqis are deprived of clean water, proper sanitation facilities and medical care, 2/3 of America does not support the war
and
Bush is quoted having no regrets about the unpopular war in Iraq despite the 'high cost in lives and treasure'.

the democrat candidate (personally, Obama)better win the election,
outlay a sustainable exit strategy, pull the troops out and focus on some of the more important things on hand now like salvaging the US economy.

I know its not new but I was so tickled by this first thing in the morning,

'Superman wears Chuck Norris pyjamas.'

hehe

on a separate note, despite the central banks of the world working together to liquidate the credit market - I've been reading contradictory reports that it will and will not salvage the ailing US economy.
but one thing is certain, there's more down before its going to go up.
COME ON.

and yes, its tricky getting my feet around - considering every time i speak,
the locals want to jack me.
I'M NOT A TOURIST DAMMIT.
but first up, party in the south this weekend!
